Friday-July 21-Day 31-Driving Down the Cassier

By 8:30 this morning we crossed the Teslin River, still on the
Alaska Highway, and continued east.

The sun was shining and the skies were bright.
Marie has been doing a lot of driving, which means she does not get to enjoy the scenery as much as the rest of us do.
So today I drove and she road shotgun to enjoy the view, without the responsibility of keeping the rig on the road. We soon arrived at Nugget City where we filled the gas tank, and then left the Alaska Highway in the Yukon for the last time and headed south on the Cassiar Highway.  British Columbia welcomed us!

We were not on the Cassiar very long at all until we started to drive through a forest fire burn. And for the next 50 miles Maries scenery to enjoy was  blackened trees!😞

But after we left the burn in our wake, the scenery turned lovely again!  But by now Marie was back behind the wheel.  I had a poor night's sleep last night so I lasted only an hour.
 It was naptime for me!

Oh, the beautiful fireweed!
and the lovely lakes!

 The view from the back.....
Early in the day our drive was through forested land with rolling hills. Later in the day we again reached the mountains.

We were a bit disappointed we did not see more animals along the way. The Cassiar is very remote and we drove many miles with no signs along the road and almost no other vehicles. It seemed like the animals should be right along the roadways, waiting for us to take their picture.  But they weren't!😞😞😞
So we decided that if we drove into the evening we may have a better chance to see God's four legged furry creatures. We drove until 5:45 and decided to get supper  at a roadhouse and then drive another hour or so.  We passed only a few eating places  today, and this one looked pretty nice and pretty pricey.  (Well, everything is pricey in the remote areas!)  But the reviews in The Milepost said they have very good food.
So Marie went in to check before we all piled out. She said their dinners were $25-$35 BUT  they have a bowl of broccoli soup and bread for $8. So we went in to grab a bite.  The soup was delicious, AND it was self-serve, all you care to eat!  Within 45 minutes we were back on the road again, tummies full, hearts grateful for a good meal at a cheap price.

And then, down the road a ways, we saw this big black boy posing so nicely for us! He was enjoying his supper so much he didn't even notice much that we were there!

After driving  500 miles for the day, we found a place to park for the night at this provincial park.
Our camping book said this was one of the prettiest parks in BC.
And it was lovely! Some  of the sites were along the lake, and the rest had a lake view. We got the very last RV site!  It was Friday night and the place was full!  We had no hook-ups, and supper was over,  so we  played Rook until bedtime.

  1. 500 miles in a day. That makes me weary to think of it. Now I have to go to the map to see where you were on this day. I am learning more geography as you travel.
