Saturday July 8-Day 18-Airplanes and Salmon

Saturday morning I texted Willow and said coffee will be served at 8 AM!   So she joined us to share the first fresh rain-washed moments of the day!  Later some of her kiddos started to arrive, as well as their little furry Libee.

we gave their children some of our grandma love!

Craig checked our fluid levels, and added some oil.

We wanted to go to the Salmon Bake for supper, so we had some time to fill.  We went grocery shopping, got a downtown look at Fairbanks, and then played hide and seek until we finally found Craig's place of work. 
(He wasn't really hiding, but we were seeking for awhile😌)
He is the Mechanic Foreman at Wrights Air Service.
He showed us around his shop and explained what he does to keep bush flying safe. It was very interesting. He doesn't usually work on Saturday but he was having problems with an aircraft that needed to be in the air by Monday. 

We then headed over to Pioneer Park, which is a history museum and the place that served the Salmon Bake! I love old cars! And how about these rules for school teachers from 1897? Oh my!

We were the first ones to arrive at the Salmon Bake!
We had not eaten much all day in anticipation of this meal,
and we were all hungry!

Waiting for supper to be served at 5 PM. It was a lovely outdoor setting! and a delightful evening to be outside.

Wood grilled fresh salmon, beer-battered cod, prime rib, salad bar, grizzly baked beans, roasted herb potatoes....
It was SOOOOO  good!

With our appetites satiated, and our stomachs as full as we wanted to make them, we headed south from Fairbanks on the Parks Highway, and stopped at this Campground in a little Alaskan village on our way to Denali.

It was a nice place to spend the night. And again, at bedtime, we had a rain storm, this time with wind, lightning and thunder. 

It rained throughout the night.

 We thought about how many times it rained in the night, 

and that we had only two rainy days of driving.
